Philosophy

Philosophy  …. The old adage about the blind leading the blind would be an example of a philosophical statement but philosophy isn’t just some old dudes talking rubbish while smoking their pipe; it is the study of logic and reason.

Philosophy is one of the hard-core sciences often matched with higher mathematics

Professor Nagel teaches philosophy and admits that some things may point to God’s reality, but he doesn’t want God to exist so he is caught between what he wants to be true and what is actually true.

In "The Blind Watchmaker" (1996, p. 1)  Richard Dawkins starts with an observation stating  “Biology is the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.” but he then goes on to make a philosophical statement,   “Natural selection is the blind watchmaker, blind because it does not see ahead, does not plan consequences, has no purpose in view. Yet the living results of natural selection overwhelmingly impress us with the illusion of design and planning".  The consequence of design is the demand for a designer; but because Dawkins' worldview tells him otherwise, he sidelines the evidence, calling the evidence an illusion. He has to; a worldview that states 'God does not exist' cannot co-exist with an admission that God exists.

Ultimately, science is left to acknowledge the insight of Robert Jastrow, a 20th century evolutionist whose words are as true now and they were then.  He said  “The theory of the chemical origin of life is held by scientists as an article of faith without proof."  He's an evolutionist but states elsewhere in his work that evolutionists ultimately have to accept that it is first and foremost a matter of belief just as much as those who believe it is a supernaturally created world; both theories stand with a belief system as their foundation.  Obviously, it is an either or choice - how do we choose which explanatory system is right ?  Easy; we then use Ockham’s razor to reject the theory that doesn't align with reason or the evidence.
